DC Challenge
In case you've just returned from a 40-year trip to Pluto, "DC" refers to Dennis Conner, "Mr. America's Cup" or, as I like to think, "the one guy I would most enjoy seeing in Valencia in 2007." ACC funding issues aside, Dennis just announced a new competition to be held in New York City Harbor this coming August, 2006. It will modestly be entitled the "Dennis Conner International Yacht Club Challenge," and is for - get this - amateurs. So you've got Dennis Conner, a fleet of identical J/24s, fellow amateurs from probably everywhere and the splendors of New York City for partners/spouses who may be less-than-into hanging out at the docks for the better part of a week. (Brilliant! Let's see ... I could drop the wife off at the Met on Tuesday morning and then, say about Saturday ... ) If your yacht club would like to express interest and receive an invitation, head for this form.

Cabinet Gives Go Ahead to Whitby Harbour Proposals

Proposals to improve the Upper Harbour Area in Whitby have been endorsed by Scarborough Borough Council’s Cabinet following a public consultation that saw the majority of respondents state their support for the plans. A planning application will now be discussed at a meeting of the Development and Regulation Committee on the 23rd March 2006 before final funding applications are submitted.
An exhibition of the proposals was on display at the Tourist Information Centre in Whitby between the 4th and 19th February asking for people’s opinions on plans to improve the pontoons, car parking and general environment at the harbour and create a Water Resource Centre with facilities for harbour users, residents and visitors to the town. Overall 429 responses were received to the consultation with 278 stating that they were generally supportive of the proposals.
Leader of Scarborough Borough Council, Cllr. Eileen Bosomworth said:
“The consultation into the proposals for the Upper Harbour area were undertaken in the spirit of co-operation and best interests of the people of Whitby. The last two weeks has seen much discussion of the issues and we have taken on board all the comments made in reaching our decision.
“There will be further consultation around the planning application, but I would ask that everyone now works together to make the best of these much needed proposals. We have a healthy waiting list for berths in Whitby but the existing facilities are coming to the end of their life and will soon not be able to compete with neighbouring harbours that are upping the ante. It is unlikely that the Borough Council would be able to afford to fund the improvements on their own which is why we should grasp the offer of external funding and deliver something that will be of benefit to all.”
The proposals have been drawn up by a working group of local stakeholders and are expected to cost in the region of £2.8million. Scarborough Borough Council has agreed to contribute £1.3million towards the scheme and Yorkshire Forward and the European Regional Development Fund have indicated their willingness to support the project.
