You are all no doubt aware that a seabed survey is being undertaken by Cleveland Potash that coincides with the scheduled race from Whitby to Hartlepool and return on 8th and 9th August. This survey is causing us some severe problems and after having prolonged discussions with CPL and the survey team I think it prudent to change our racing plans and sail to Scarborough. The issues are:-
The survey area is a no-go zone.
The survey area extends out some 13 km.
There is a narrow corridor of 1.5 km between the bottom edge of the survey area and the shore.
During Saturday and Sunday 'land tie lines' will be laid from the shore to the survey area across this corridor.
Local fishermen will be laying pots in the corridor during the week.
Cable laying vessels will be in constant operation steaming in an approximate north, south direction.
13 km to sea is a substantial detour.
If a yacht is in trouble or we encounter adverse weather conditions how can we ensure that we are always clear of the survey area?
CPL's timetable may change and at short notice.
Whilst they do not have any jurisdiction to prohibit us sailing in the area CPL strongly urge that we change our plans for that weekend.
Local fisherman groups and sub-aqua groups are also being consulted and are cooperating with CPL.
In view of the above we should change our plans and sail to Scarborough if that is what people want. If we declare this in good time then we can get berths organised;
Unless anyone has any major objection then we will follow this plan and issue sailing instructions this coming weekend.

Seismic Survey Update

Please be advised that the above survey will now commence on the 31st July and will run for an expected 52 days, this including an anticipated 10 weather down days.
As the survey area has been slightly revised, I attached plan details for your information. You will note the survey area has been divided into six consecutive sections, survey operations beings undertaken in each consecutive section on a week by week basis, subject to weather.

Mariners are advised that urgent engineering repairs will be undertaken to Whitby swing bridge.
It is anticipated that work will be completed in the tidal period between normal bridge openings.
Work will commence at 1900 on 22 July 2009 and is planned to be completed by 0300 on 23 July 2009.
Thorough planning has taken place and engineers will make every effort to minimise disruption to bridge/harbour movements. However possibility exists where unforeseen circumstances could occur. Please take this into account when planning your vessels berthing movements.

Due to a security breach the Marina Amenity Block access code has been changed and Marina users should approach the Marina Superintendent for the new code.
Carillion Race Day
Carillion Race Day
I would to take this opportunity to thank all Club Members who took part in the Carillion Day. So many different elements of the Club pulled together to provide our visitors with an excellent day.
The Breakfast in the Club was a brilliant start, and of course the excellent weather played a part but the Race had an superb turnout with sixteen boats taking part. The result wasn't fixed but the Carillion Regional Manager's boat (Esk Argo) won the race......the Pimms Pontoon Party was the perfect after race Pontoon Party. The BBQ and drinks in the Club in the evening provided a perfect end to a great day for our Carillion guests.
The feed back from Carillion has been excellent, I will offer just one of the comments I have received which was 'the Club is obviously a very friendly Club, which can organise a very professional event'!!!!
Again, could I thank everyone who assisted and turned out to support the event.

Carillion Race Day

Whitby Yacht Club are pleased to announce the ‘Carillion Race Day’ in conjunction with the ‘Heros Charity event’. The idea of the event is to provide a days sailing to Carillion employees and invited guests and with a view to introducing new members/ and possible crew to the Club.
The format for the Day is:
• Bacon Rolls and coffee in the WYC Club house from 1115hrs.
• Meet and greet by Racers & Guests at 1130hrs.
• A Pursuit Race Start at 1345hrs. 1505hrs tide – Bridges available after 1310hrs.
• Drinks on Pontoon (Pimms and soft drinks) after Races
• ‘Free BBQ and beer’ (via Coupons for Carillion Guests) on WYC Balcony at 1630hrs for Carillion Corporate Guests – Club/BBQ open to WYC Members and Carillion Families
• Prize Giving at 1715hrs for all Carillion Guests and winning skippers etc
It is anticipated that Carillion will provide between fourteen and twenty guests subject the number of Club boats who ‘volunteer’ to partake in the racing on the day. A firm commit will be required by skippers prior to the event. Each boat will have a maximum of two ‘guests’ on the day, boats will be chosen by ‘names out of a hat’ basis.
I hope that as many skippers will make the effort to support this event, which is a new venture to the Club and may lead to events.
