Adventures of Anne & Roy
Hi All
Thought we would give you an update of our travels.
We are now clear of all tornados, cold and snow etc and enjoying hot sunny days in the 90's in the beautiful Zion Canyon in Utah. On our travels to reach here we have crossed Oklahoma from right to left including the panhandle, into Southern Colorado which has captivated us so much we could have stayed longer. We saw the amazing Great Sand dunes National Park which rise to 750 feet and are sat at the base of the San Juan Mountains.Tough to climb but fun to come down !
We then went into the San Juan Mountains visiting Creede and Silverton, still old cowboy mining towns. Roy was found loitering outside one of the Bordellos but he then realised it had closed in 1949!
We spent a wonderful morning in Pergosa Springs - 18 individual, naturally hot therapeutic springs ranging from 97oC to 113oC. We reeked of sulphur for days !
Still heading west our next stop was at Durango and then Cortez where we spent 2 days visiting Mesa Verde National Park - an awe inspiring area of cliff dwellings from 700 years ago.
We have spent time watching and taking part in Navajo dances - well we sort of joined hands and went round in ever decreasing circles till we finished up all shaking hands with each other.
Monument Valley was "monumental". Everyone feels as if they have been there as its in so many films but it was awesome ( a word we find ourselves using more and more). We stayed in a campground in the Valley right next to the famous Merrick Butte and Two Mittens, watching the sun rise and set followed by a billion stars in the desert sky while listening to Navajo drums and chanting echoing all around. It was haunting and eerie.
On our journey to the Grand Canyon we stopped at Page, and uninspiring place but some people told us about a place called Antelope Canyon so we spent 2 hours looking at this wonderful red rock slot canyon, sometimes only wide enough for one person to walk in. Carved by sand water and wind into fantastic shapes with shafts of sunlight filtering through - another exceptional Navajo sight !
The North Rim of the Grand Canyon saw us hiking into and around the canyon. It far surpassed the more popular and busy south rim.
So now we are spending a week in Zion National Canyon. they really have it sorted here, no cars allowed in the canyon, free bus shuttle service(propane run) every 8 minutes stops at 7 different places in the canyon and there are walks, hikes climbs for all shapes and sizes.
We did the 5 mile Angels Landing Trail - 1488 feet from the canyon bottom and by the time I had climbed and scrambled up rocks clinging to chains to stop from falling off I felt as if I had almost reached heaven - but well worth the effort !
Roys hopes of reaching Alaska are fading as we are spending longer in places than planned.
We hope the sailing is improving for you all and get out there Class B and give Samaki a run for his money !
Finally just so you dont think Im enjoying myself TOO much Roy has purchased a guitar from an Indian pawn shop and after re-stringing it he "serenades" me on the campsite each night. I bet some of you are missing his music on the pontoon!

Whitby Yacht Club have a deep water pontoon mooring available situated in the lower harbour between the swing bridge and the lifeboat pier, with access to the sea at all states of the tide. Access is by tender which increases security.
