I thought I would ‘Take Five’ to say a few words regarding our Dinner tonight, it’s a bit like ‘Déjà vu’ after last year which was an ‘Ace’ night, although you only have to cast you minds back to a couple of years ago when this night was almost my ‘Nemesis’ with an incident with a well know Trophy!
I thought we would ‘Bite on the Bullet’ and ensure that there was ‘No Compromise’ after the ‘Antix’ of last year, which certainly had ‘No Limits’, this event is a becoming to be a bit of an ‘Icon’ in our Social programme!
The dinner was excellent, the starter was not ‘Eskcargo’, nor was the main course ‘Jalfrezi’ but the sweet was almost ‘Mint Imperial’, haaaa and the Coffee wasn’t ‘Teemaine’, but I would like this opportunity to thank the Dunsley Hall and staff for welcoming us back again with another excellent meal….
We have not been ‘Cavalier’ in our approach to tonight, we have come up ‘Trumps’ and orgainised a great ‘Beatnic’ Disco to ‘Serenade’ you,….I will repeat that if you are from ‘Parkstone’, we have orgainised a disco to ‘Serenade you’!
We were going to book ‘Bob’ ‘Wombat’ but he was ‘Ramoing’ elsewhere tonight or was he just ‘Skywalking’ with ‘Lady Hamilton’. Then we thought about a ‘Cornish Piper’, another thought we had was to arrange floor act tonight with ‘Labedow’ the ‘Samaki’ Warrior, sorry a ‘Samaria’ warrior but that came to nothing but ‘Cold Steel’, the warrior turned out to be a bit of a ‘Beestie’ on a ‘Pilgrim’ to ‘Troiggen’ in the land of ‘Miniarca’!
I hope you have enjoyed this light hearted Vegality jest, sorry Gray, you going to have to change you boat’s name….

Colin Smith
Colin passed away on Sunday morning.
He was one of our members in the 80's, joining the club around 1979
Those who new him will remember him for the twinkle in his eye and aggression on the start line.
He sailed a number of boats throughout his sailing time at Whitby, "Flying Tyke" possibly the most well known.
His wife Kay passed away earlier this year after they returned to the UK from Portugal where they spent many happy years.
His funeral will take place next Tuesday in Harrogate.

Works to build new Public Toilets and Marina Facilities at Whitby Upper Harbour, Langbourne Road, Whitby, will commence on the 5th of October 2009 and are scheduled for completion on the 31st March 2010.
Ken Ferry Builders will be undertaking the works.
Public Toilet Facilities.
During this period alternative public toilet facilities are available at New Quay Road, Whitby.
Marina User Facilities
Marina Facility users should report to the Harbour Masters office to collect passes for alternative toilet and shower facilities at New Quay Road, for use during operational hours (9am - 5pm). Radar keys are available for out of hours toilet only facilities.
Services to pontoons
On rare occasions some temporary loss of services to the pontoons may be experienced this should not last for more than a few hours at any given time. We will endeavour to inform Marina users prior to any disconnection of services.
Parking
Some public parking provision will be lost during the works but alternative provision will be provided at endeavour Wharf during busy periods.
Marina user parking should remain unaffected. All parking will be reinstated following the works.

The site supervisor will be on hand to deal with day to day issues or alternatively please contact the Whitby Harbour Office.

As you may have noticed the Forum has been down during recent weeks.
The recent problems have now been largely resolved but due to a problem with a recent backup a number of Members registering from mid season onward may not have access. Whitby Yacht Club Moorings
The repair work in the vicinity of the WYC Moorings has now been completed along with the necessary dredging to make the area fit for purpose.
The Harbour Authorities have asked that users of the pontoon moorings please return yachts to their allotted places as soon as possible.
Whitby Yacht Club would like to thank the Harbour Master and his staff for there help in accommodating our craft whilst the remedial work has been taking place.

Bridge Centenary
The arrangements for the 'Sail through' to celebrate the Bridge Centenary are as follows:
Bridge men will be on duty from 1500hrs and will put a bridge on at approx 1520hrs to allow any vessels in the lower harbour to come into the upper harbour to take part in the event.
At 1600hrs the bridge will open to let the sail through begin with the largest vessels proceeding first. The vessels shall proceed into the outer harbour entrance.
All vessels will return on the normal scheduled bridges. At the time of the sail through the renaming of the bridge ceremony will be taking place so can I respectively ask that no horns are used at this point.
The extra planned bridge at 1300hrs will take place as scheduled.
The Harbour Master hopes that as many Club Members as possible will support the sail past?

Whitby to Hartlepool Race
You are all no doubt aware that a seabed survey is being undertaken by Cleveland Potash that coincides with the scheduled race from Whitby to Hartlepool and return on 8th and 9th August. This survey is causing us some severe problems and after having prolonged discussions with CPL and the survey team I think it prudent to change our racing plans and sail to Scarborough. The issues are:-
The survey area is a no-go zone.
The survey area extends out some 13 km.
There is a narrow corridor of 1.5 km between the bottom edge of the survey area and the shore.
During Saturday and Sunday 'land tie lines' will be laid from the shore to the survey area across this corridor.
Local fishermen will be laying pots in the corridor during the week.
Cable laying vessels will be in constant operation steaming in an approximate north, south direction.
13 km to sea is a substantial detour.
If a yacht is in trouble or we encounter adverse weather conditions how can we ensure that we are always clear of the survey area?
CPL's timetable may change and at short notice.
Whilst they do not have any jurisdiction to prohibit us sailing in the area CPL strongly urge that we change our plans for that weekend.
Local fisherman groups and sub-aqua groups are also being consulted and are cooperating with CPL.
In view of the above we should change our plans and sail to Scarborough if that is what people want. If we declare this in good time then we can get berths organised;
Unless anyone has any major objection then we will follow this plan and issue sailing instructions this coming weekend.

As the survey area has been slightly revised, I attached plan details for your information. You will note the survey area has been divided into six consecutive sections, survey operations beings undertaken in each consecutive section on a week by week basis, subject to weather.

Carillion Race Day

I would to take this opportunity to thank all Club Members who took part in the Carillion Day. So many different elements of the Club pulled together to provide our visitors with an excellent day.
The Breakfast in the Club was a brilliant start, and of course the excellent weather played a part but the Race had an superb turnout with sixteen boats taking part. The result wasn't fixed but the Carillion Regional Manager's boat (Esk Argo) won the race......the Pimms Pontoon Party was the perfect after race Pontoon Party. The BBQ and drinks in the Club in the evening provided a perfect end to a great day for our Carillion guests.
The feed back from Carillion has been excellent, I will offer just one of the comments I have received which was 'the Club is obviously a very friendly Club, which can organise a very professional event'!!!!
Again, could I thank everyone who assisted and turned out to support the event.

Whitby Yacht Club are pleased to announce the ‘Carillion Race Day’ in conjunction with the ‘Heros Charity event’. The idea of the event is to provide a days sailing to Carillion employees and invited guests and with a view to introducing new members/ and possible crew to the Club.
The format for the Day is:
• Bacon Rolls and coffee in the WYC Club house from 1115hrs.
• Meet and greet by Racers & Guests at 1130hrs.
• A Pursuit Race Start at 1345hrs. 1505hrs tide – Bridges available after 1310hrs.
• Drinks on Pontoon (Pimms and soft drinks) after Races
• ‘Free BBQ and beer’ (via Coupons for Carillion Guests) on WYC Balcony at 1630hrs for Carillion Corporate Guests – Club/BBQ open to WYC Members and Carillion Families
• Prize Giving at 1715hrs for all Carillion Guests and winning skippers etc
It is anticipated that Carillion will provide between fourteen and twenty guests subject the number of Club boats who ‘volunteer’ to partake in the racing on the day. A firm commit will be required by skippers prior to the event. Each boat will have a maximum of two ‘guests’ on the day, boats will be chosen by ‘names out of a hat’ basis.
I hope that as many skippers will make the effort to support this event, which is a new venture to the Club and may lead to events.

Repairs commence to the piling and infrastructure on the East Side north of the Whitby Swing Bridge. Vessels are requested to be vigilant while transiting the area. Speed should be reduced to that consistent with the safety of both own vessel and operations taking place.
Advice can be obtained from Harbour Watchkeepers on VHF Channel 11.

Seismic Survey

Yacht Club Pontoon Moorings
YWA Work on East Side Concrete Shelf
The Harbour Master has informed the Club that the Yorkshire Water Contractors (Costain) will be returning to site on the 8th of June with work continuing on breaking out the defective concrete.
It is envisaged that on 22nd June the piling/workboat "Rebecca M" will arrive to undertake the piling element of the repairs and it envisaged that all works should be complete by Friday the 17th of July.
The HM has instructed "Costain" that normal working hours only would be acceptable and noise needs to be kept within reasonable levels, although it may be necessary on occasions to work the tides to complete tasks dependant on water levels.
The Harbour Master has informed the Club that the Yorkshire Water Contractors (Costain) will be returning to site on the 8th of June with work continuing on breaking out the defective concrete.
It is envisaged that on 22nd June the piling/workboat "Rebecca M" will arrive to undertake the piling element of the repairs and it envisaged that all works should be complete by Friday the 17th of July.
The HM has instructed "Costain" that normal working hours only would be acceptable and noise needs to be kept within reasonable levels, although it may be necessary on occasions to work the tides to complete tasks dependant on water levels.

Spring 6 Race
The start for Spring 6 Race scheduled for 0830hrs on Sunday 17th May 2009 has been postponed. The Race will now start at 1300hrs on Sunday 17th. Please note the tide is 1002hrs so beware of the last bridge time for exiting the upper harbour. We will use the 1730hrs bridge to come in on.

Racing Cancelled
Pursuit Race 3 scheduled for 1000hrs on Saturday 9th May 09 has be cancelled. This is due to the lack of water in the harbour and moorings on Saturday morning prior to the 0930hrs Bridge opening,

Public Waste Bins
We have had a strict warning from Scarborough Borough Council for tipping club waste in the public waste bins near the club premises.
If club waste is found in these bins again WYC could be prosecuted for fly tipping.
Club waste must be tipped in the bins provided at the club house.

Race Station
I think everybody will be very pleased to know that the new metal framework was successfully fitted to the Race Station on Saturday. I would like to thank all the 'work party volunteers' who turned out to assist with the job - 'Well Done!'
Its nice to see the Club members working together to get a Job Done!

Cariad

New Workboat Arrives Safely
Members will all be pleased to know the 'Ammonite Too' (WYC Work Boat) has arrived safely in Whitby. My thanks to the Work Boat Team for sourcing such a great boat for the Club and special mention to Gareth Morgan and Chris Chadwick who drove down to the South Coast to collect the boat and bring it back to Whitby and for Steve from Coates Marine who kindly assisted it with the boats 'lift off' at 6pm on a Saturday evening.
The Boat is now safely stored on the Marina car park adjacent to the Marina Attendants' Office.

If anyone has any gear surplus to requirements for the Workboat it will be gratefully accepted.
We have already acquired a pair of suitable mooring buoys, mooring chain, a boat hook and a coil of rope but we still require fenders, blue antifouling etc it dosen't have to be a full tin. They will all mix together.

Club Pontoons.
Club Pontoons.
The current unsatisfactory situation on the Club moorings due to the shift of the piling adjacent to them, will necessitate the pontoons being moved to allow work to progress.
This will take place within the next few days and will be done in conjunction with the Harbour Authority.
The work affecting boat owners and their moorings should be completed by the beginning of May.
The Harbour Authority are working closely with our Moorings Secretary to ensure the minimum amount of disruption. They also assure us that alternative moorings will be found for boats during that period.

Work Boat
Work Boat Project
Progress has been made in the search for a new work boat.
The sub committee of Gareth Morgan, Gerry Firth, Ian Drake and Dave Wharton armed with the mandate to locate and purchase a suitable craft have now successfully accomplished the task.
Gareth and Gerry travelled to Portsmouth to look over what they thought would be a suitable craft. This proved to be the case and a deal was struck bring the project in well below budget. The funds saved will be used to find a suitable storage trailer.
The boat will arrive in Whitby, transported on a fuel only cost by Chris Chadwick for the start of the season in time for the mark laying and also maintenance of the pontoons. The responsibility for the running, repairs and maintenance will come under the Moorings Committee of which Gareth is currently Secretary.
The Committee and Members of WYC send congratulations to all on a job well done.
