It is with deep regret that I inform members of the death of John Hardy on Saturday 8th October aged 82 years. John served on the Committee as Rear Commodore Cruise in 1979; he was Commodore in 1983 and was also Assistant Secretary in 1988 & 1989 and up till his death was a Trustee of the Club.
John was a true gentleman and an avid supporter of Whitby Yacht Club and will be sadly missed by those who knew him. He owned serveral boats at Whitby including ‘Godiva’ a Pioneer 30) and ‘Avril Dawn’ (Sparkman & Stevens 30). Whilst he was basically a Crusing man he also enjoyed racing, notably he won the Muir Cup in 1985 and the Early Bird Trophy in 1987, both sailing Avril Dawn. John maintained his connection with the Club after he moved to West Yorkshire and was a regular attendee at the annual Past Commodores Dinner where he was always keen to tell the odd salty dog story or two.
John was born in Morley in West Yorkshire, he attended Giggleswick School. Evacuated to Faiborne in Wales during the war.
He entered HMS Conway January 1946 for a two Year Cadetship, whilst he was at Conway he became Captain of Conway’s 1st XV and Snr. Cadet Captain Forecastle Division. John left HMS Conway in December 1947. He then joined ‘The Clan Line’ – Cayzer Irvine & Co. Trading to South and East Africa via the Cape to India, Pakistan and Bangladesh via Suez.
John then left the sea and gained a pilots licence to fly, he joined his brother crop spraying with his brother who was an ex RAF pilot.
He then joined his Father in the family business - John S. Hardy & Co. Ltd., in the heavy woollens side of the trade. The woollen business was changing rapidly in the late 1960’s – so they commenced trading ‘shoddy’ as fertiliser and sold bagged shoddy to Woolworths.
John being an entrepreneur saw money in redevelopment and bought, demolished and rebuilt industrial buildings to sell or lease in the 1970’s and 1980’s and was still buying and selling industrial land up to his passing away.
John’s first wife, Shirley died of cancer in 1976 aged 42. He later remarried ‘Binky’ Robinson whilst he lived in Whitby and were both very familiar faces in the Club on a Saturday evening!
He leaves two sons Christopher and Robin. John’s daughter, Avril Dawn died tragically in a car accident in 1981.
John’s funeral will take place at 1330hrs on Monday 17th October at Wakefield Crematorium, Stanbridge Lane, Kettlethorpe, Wakefield WF4 3JA. The Coffin will be draped in the Blue Ensign of HMS Conway to which John retained strong links to.

Lift Out 2011
Lift out has now been confirmed and will take place on Saturday 29th October 2011 commencing at 0800hrs.
The existing dockside crane has been decommissioned and sold so we have now decided to hire in a contractor to take it’s place.
The lift will commence as usual at 0800hrs and the slings etc will be available for use.
The list below is of the boats registered with us for the lift at this time.
Unfortunately we will not be able to include any late arrivals as this would entail hiring the crane for additional time incurring further expense.
Ensure your trailer is prepared and ready for use.

Would all Hull Marina customers please be aware that during the period 1st October 2011 to 31st March 2012, any penning activity between the hours of 2000 and 0600 will need to be booked with the duty lock keeper at least 24 hours prior to the overnight period of which you wish to pen. The booking can be made in person or by calling the Lock Keeper on: 07789178501, Channel 80 or during office working hours on: 01482 609960.
Cancellations will be accepted at any time up to 1600 prior to the overnight period for which the booking was made. Cancellations made after this time may be subject to a £25 charge unless the cancellation was due to severe weather conditions.
